The physical exam
Should include:
- Blood pressure, pulse, pulse oximetry (pulse ox, taken with a monitor on your finger), and respirations.
- A check of your ears, heart, abdomen, reflexes, and pulses.
- Depending on your age (50 or over), a stethoscope exam of your carotid arteries.
These basic exams should at least be included.
Lab work
- CMP (Comprehensive Metabolic Panel)
- Lipid panel (cholesterols)
- CBC (Complete Blood Count)
- For men, a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen): White men beginning at age 45 and African American men beginning at age 40.
A PSA lab result's commonly referenced normal range is below 4.0, but age, ethnicity, and the rate of rise from one result to the next also need to be considered. It is more than just a number.
If you have concerns, it is best to review your result with a healthcare provider.
Pap smear
- Every three years for a patient with a normal Pap history.
- Every five years if Pap and HPV-DNA testing are done together.
- If you are unable to get a Pap test, consider a home HPV swab every one to three years. Eligibility and recommended timing can vary.
Mammogram
- A screening mammogram every two years if you are not having symptoms.
- If you are having any breast symptoms, seek a provider for an order for a diagnostic mammogram.
Colon cancer screening
Choices include:
IFOBT / FIT
Screening with an IFOBT (also known as a fecal immunochemical test, or FIT) every year. You can order a kit online; look for a CLIA-waived kit for reliability.
Cologuard
Screening with a Cologuard kit every three years. If you do not have a provider to order one, Cologuard can connect you with an online provider to place the order. The kit will be shipped to your home.
